- Doug,
-
- When will CMD start publication of Commodore World? I just got a new catalog
- from CMD with a subscription offer. It sounds great :) We need something
- since TC128, RUN, Gazette, and others have left us.

- The first issue of Commodore World is scheduled for release the first week of
- April. For those who haven't heard about it, it will be published 8
- times/year, with an annual subscription rate of $29.95. With the first issue
- we're shooting for around 44 pages, though this may vary a bit. We've signed
- several regular writers including a few that most of you should already be
- familiar with; Steve Vander Ark will head up the GEOS column, Tim Walsh will
- appear initially in our Tips column, Gene Barker of Madman Software heads up a
- BASIC programming column. Mark Fellows and I will both have regular columns as
- well. You can also expect to see some other familiar names from time to time,
- such as Jeff Jones, Jim Oldfield, and others.
-
- Commodore World expects to be a well-rounded publication with regular columns
- for most every level of user, from beginners to experts. And while we will
- feature some in-depth information on CMD products from time to time, this is
- not the main thrust of the publication.
-
- And I'd like to point out that neither Compute Gazette nor TC have left the
- market; Gazette has changed to disk format, joining LoadStar and CEE-64 Alive
- in that category; TC-128/64 has not been published on a very regular basis,
- even when Loren Lovehaug was running it, but it is still around and has
- announced a more aggressive publishing schedule. We at CMD hope to see these
- and all the other Commodore publications continue to flourish. As users, we
- all need as much information and support as we can get, and it's important to
- note that different publications provide varying insight, features, and
- information. In years previous, the 64/128 market has supported a lot of
- different publications at the same time, and we believe that a lot of users
- subscribed to more than one at a time. We hope to see that trend continue.

- So should I send the check today or wait a month or two? I am always excited
- to see new Commodore magazines, and it seems that we are starting to gain back
- some ground after a dark season (was that metaphore mixed enough?). The only
- problem I see is ... April? I don't wanna wait!

- I would say that if you have decided to subscribe, get the subscription in
- right away. It helps us to plan better when people subscribe sooner. Checks
- and Money Orders will naturally have to be cashed right away to avoid letting
- them get 'stale', but anyone ordering via credit card (Visa or MC) will not
- get charged until a week or so prior the first issue publication. For the time
- being, checks and money orders can be made out to Creative Micro Designs,
- Inc., and we'll transfer the funds to Commodore World. Commodore World will,
- however, soon be incorporated separately to avoid any mixing of funds as well
- as to provide a clear distinction between CMD as a supplier and Commodore
- World as a magazine.
-
- Sorry we couldn't schedule to begin sooner than April, but I'm sure you know
- that there's a lot of work involved in lining up articles, advertisers, and
- columnists, plus a lot of things that have to be set up for policies, layouts,
- contracts, author guidelines, etc. And even after the first issue is ready, it
- takes about three weeks to get everything printed and ready to ship. It's a
- big job that takes a lot of preparation, and we wouldn't want the quality of
- the first issue to suffer because we rushed it. :)

- If you're interested in advertising, then you should get in touch with us
- directly. All the info you're asking about is included in our advertising
- package which can be forwarded to you once you have contacted us. The
- advertising is being handled by Charles A. Christianson, and you can reach
- him at 413-525-0023, M-F, 10 AM - 5 PM EST. There is a special going on if
- you book advertising for the first four issues, and Charles can give you
- details on that when you contact him... but time is indeed short now for
- getting in on that, so I'd try to contact him right away if you're truly
- interested.
-
- And just so everyone is up to date:
-
- For those of you who have not yet heard, Creative Micro Designs will
- soon begin publishing a new paper magazine aimed at all Commodore 64
- and 128 users. Commodore World magazine will debut in April, with
- following issues coming approximately every six weeks (8 issues per
- year). Subscriptions are available through Creative Micro Designs,
- Inc., P.O. Box 646, East Longmeadow MA 01028-0646. Price is $29.95 for
- U.S. subscriptions (addresses outside of the U.S. may contact CMD for
- price). Credit card orders may be placed through 1-800-638-3263.
-
- Commodore World will contain a long list of regular columns and
- departments, plus feature articles, reviews, advertising, and more.
- Each issue will come packed in a glossy cover with approximately 44
- to 52 pages. Here's a brief rundown of the regular columns and
- departments you can expect to see:
-
- BEGINNINGS A word (more likely quite a few words) from our
- Editor.
-
- THE IN BOX A forum for our readers to sound off.
-

- your system easier and more enjoyable. Tim Walsh
- will launch this feature in the first issue with
- a few of his own gems, collected over the years.
-
- THE CONNECTION Coverage and information about Commodore User
- Groups. Plus, news and information direct from
- product vendors and publishers of other
- Commodore-related products and magazines.
-
- FOR STARTERS First steps and tips for beginners come from
- an elementary school teacher who has been
- teaching Commodore computers to his students.

- Doug, I have noticed that CMD did not do a good job in marketing the new
- magazine. for instance, you could have used your customer list and sent out
- advertising to let them know about the new magazine. Right now, it seems that
- the only way current Commodore users are going to find out about the magazine
- is by word of mouth. I'll be spreading the word to other BBS systems that I'm
- on to get the word out. However, it would have been nice to have received

- Harold,
-
- I've been harping about the same thing to some degree; but being on the
- inside, I understand can understand why a bit more. You see, right now we own
- something close to 200,000 names/addresses. A little math will show you that
- mailing all these names would cost us close to $40,000 for postage alone, let
- alone what printing costs would be on top of that. Granted, it might prove to
- be money well spent... but with several other irons in the fire, there's only
- so much funding to go around. We opted to to do several things at once to try
- to reach as many users as we could without breaking the bank. This included
- advertising in dieHard and The Loadstar Newsletter; posts in the Commodore
- Conferences on Fidonet, comp.sys.cbm on Internet, as well as messages here and
- other networks we frequent; and through mailings of our current catalog (of
- which we've mailed about 9,000 in the last two months). A postcard mailing was
- also planned, but time simply hasn't permitted us to follow this up. This
- latter aspect is the part I've been harping about myself, though I have to
- admit that it probably makes more sense to spend a few more cents per customer
- and just send full catalogs - but this does slow things down a bit since we
- can only budget so much at a time for these mailings.
-
- Anyway, considering this, we have at worst case reached 9,000 users (assuming
- that there is a 100% cross-over between all the methods we've employed),
- though I suspect that ISN'T the case and that we've probably reached at least
- a couple of thousand over that figure. Part of the reason I assume we've
- reached more is due to the way the mailing has been conducted. While we're
- fairly sure there is a large cross between our standard mailing list and the
- users we've reached through dieHard, Loadstar, and online services, about one-
- half of the catalogs we've mailed in the last two months have been to a list
- of old RUN subscribers (we got the rights to a one-time mailing of this
- specific list when we bought out Techmedia a few months back). Based on the
- number of new customers this has brought , we've been able to determine that
- this method of mailing has been effective; and from the comments we've been
- hearing, a LOT of these users have been 'disconnected' from the market since
- RUN closed shop. So while I do wish we were reaching more of our own customer
- base with direct mailings right now, I'm still rather satisfied that we're
- reaching a lot of users as quickly as we can. We're not stopping these efforts
- at this point; so we'll continue to mail a mixture of our own customers and
- other lists we've obtained. Eventually, we should be able to work our way
- through pretty much every name we have; it will simply take more than a couple
- of months to do so.
-
- About the Author Guidelines. Pretty much my fault there. This was nearly
- complete when I posted around that anyone wanting to submit should request the
- Guidelines. Sadly, I was unable to finish them before I had to start work in
- earnest on getting Issue 1 together. And dueto a Syquest crash, I lost the
- work I'd done on them (along with a lot of other stuff which put us behind
- schedule on Issue 1). Now that the first issue is done, I'm finishing some
- preliminary work for Issue 2, and have to polish up the documentation for
- SmartMouse. Most of this will be done by the end of this week, and I'll be
- able to get back to putting together the Guidelines. I haven't lost track of
- those who've requested them, btw, so you will be getting them as soon as I can
- finish them up.
-
- Long post? Nah, I'm getting used to writing a lot. :)

- Hmmm... yes and no. We'll no doubt have some ML programming articles that will
- deal with disk access, and it's likely that some attention will be paid to
- performing CMD DOS functions in these articles. But I wouldn't expect to see
- anything regarding calling routines that aren't already documented in our
- manuals. Most of the 'internal' routines in our various DOS implementations
- are subject to change locations from one version to the next. Even a lot of
- the system variable locations aren't carved in stone. This gives us
- flexibility in making DOS upgrades and bug fixes; something Commodore found it

- remind myself that I wasn't reading the old Gazette or RUN. :) However, when I
- leafed through your magazine at first I felt like I was reading the old
- Commodore Magazine that I used to read when I first started computing. As a
- professional editor, I have to say you guys did an excellent job in layout,
- graphics and writing. This magazine gets four out of four stars from me.

- Thanks Harold. Considering the source, I take that as a real compliment. I'm
- willing to bet that we'll continue to try improving on it, though. We are
- pretty happy with the content we've been able to get thus far, and we have a
- lot of outside writers to thank for this. I'm just glad we've been able to
- attract knowledgable and talented authors and columnists early on. Really
- happy to hear you got your issue and that it is living up to expectation. ;)

- going the way you're going, Doug. You won't get any complaints from me.

- Sorry, Doc, but it really going to take at least 3 issues to cover the

- Best to call the office, but ifyou live in Washington State, then your issue
- is on the way. We had a problem with a mis-placed mail-bag for WA.

- I just received issue #3 of "World" and as usual, Doug and the other
- professionals at CMD did not disappoint. Keep up the first class look of the
- magazine. I have read it from cover to cover several times already and find it
- hard to put down. I even go back and read the back issues from time to time.
- Great job guys.
-
- In the issue was an article about building a digitizer board for use with
- the DigiMaster program. An individual in my user's group was wondering if
- there was such a piece of hardware or software to convert 64 digitized
- programs to Amiga format?

- Thanks for the compliments, folks. We're still learning, and I think it shows;
- we feel each issue brings us a little closer to where we want to be, yet
- teaches us a little more about how to get there. Of course, the biggest
- problem we have right now is that you folks can read them WAY FASTER than we
- can produce them. :)
-
- I.MCKINNEY: Digimaster contains a utility to convert Amiga IFF sound
- files to the Digimaster file standard, but it doesn't have
- a converter to go the other way at this point in time. I'm
- not aware of any converters for any of the various C64/128
- digitized sound formats that will do this, but I'll keep an
- eye out for one; I'll also mention this to the author of
- Digimaster.

- In the Amiga section (m555;3) you can download files #20779 and #13414. File
- 20779 is PlaySID V2.2 and is an upgraded version of the one in file 13414.
- However, I believe that the earlier version contains a larger collection of
- music files. PlaySID will play 64 SID music on an Amiga, however AmigaDOS
- V2.04 or greater is required.

- Doug, I have a suggestion for your editorial column. Could you refrain from
- using italic type? Particularly when you are using it at 9 or 10 point type
- size. It is generally hard on the eyes (particularly when you are tired and it
- is late and your eyes are about to fall out of your head) and it is generally
- recommended that italics be used sparingly. Perhaps, a better type to use (to
- set your editorial apart from the rest of the general copy) would be a sans
- serif type like Helvetica or Avant Garde.

- Normally that column should be in 12 pt., but I got long-winded. I'll have a
- look at a suitable replacement for that font, though I prefer to stick with a
- serif font. I may just drop the italics altogether - it certainly isn't so
- important that it should supercede readability. Thanks for the suggestion.

- Doug,
-
- I have a idea for Commodore World that you might be interested in. How about
- a fast reply card for the advertisers, similar to the old Compute! Gazette did
- when it had it's magazine issue. Inside the magazine would be a post card with
- assorted numbers on it, and the ads inside the magazine would each be issued a
- number. For example, if I wanted further info on Fun Graphics Machine, I would
- circle the ad's number on the post card and mail it to Commodore World and
- then in a week or so that supplier would send me a product brouchure.
- Most of my purchases are determined by the info and support I receive
- ~
